All the effort that club members have put into the preparations for the year’s biggest club event paid off handsomely as the Rotary Club of University District QC flawlessly executed its musical revue for RY 2009-2010.
It was apparent from the applause, the smiles on the guests’ faces and, yes even the occasional catcalls, that the charter anniversary presentation numbers were big successes.
Owing to a swift and orderly execution of the Induction Ceremonies, the much awaited charter anniversary presentation started early. RCUD members who have been practicing for this night for the last three or more weeks were visibly eagerly waiting at the wings to get going. It was a, says one member, a mixture of dread and gleeful anticipation.
“I’m anxious to get this over with,” he smiled.
Amid a thick cloud of theatrical smoke and the blinding flash of the strobes, and a backdrop of the old Escolta tranvia (streetcar) evolving to the modern LRT, IPP Perz Salamera, accompanied by two lady dancers, strutted from stage to the center of the dance floor and welcomed everyone with his live rendition of “Kumusta mga Kaibigan” (How Are You My Friends?).

Following the warm welcome, a medley of “kundiman” songs was rendered by Ms. Anna Miranda. This, too, was well received for it was a medley of the more lively “Kabukiran” songs which evoked images of serenade whilst planting or harvesting rice; so typical in several Fernando Amorsolo paintings. This number set the mood for the subsequent one,
the first of two dance presentations by RCUD club members, the iconic “Manila” by Hotdog; which is generally regarded as the song that launched the “Manila Sound” in the mid-70s. PP Gil Valera performed the live vocals for this song.Read entire report...
